Chickens

Chickens have become a main staple at Furbelow farms.  We have at times hundreds of free range chickens running around.  Heading into the winter I am trying to trim the flock down some.  I also have quite a few Rhode Island Red Pullets that are of laying age.  I have chickens for sale, younger ones, Americana.  Chickens are great, they work the ground all over the farm.  They don’t let any food go to waste.  The fertilize the farm.  Chickens keep down the snakes and mice.  I have a few blue marans that I was waiting for them to start laying but it looks like they may hold off until next year.

I have a group of laying white leghorns that stay with a Rhode Island Red Rooster.  They have stopped laying for the season it seems.  With the small amount of natural daylight, most of the chickens have stopped laying.  I still have a few faithful Ducks laying eggs and some hearty quail.

I am not sure what I am going to hatch for the spring, besides Pekin Duck eggs.  If anyone is interested in any chickens for the spring be sure to let me know so I can have the breeds people want.  Normally I keep a lot of Rhode Island Red’s, the hens tend to be docile naturally and with a little TLC and hand raising they are great brown egg layers.  The barred rock still have a little clan going over here, but there is only one barred rock rooster for who knows how many girls.  The Rhode Island Red Roosters are helping the barred rock rooster out whenever they get the chance.

I will post some pictures eventually but most people just give me a call and come out to the farm and pick something out.  I always have chickens for sale, even if I sell my breeding stock.  We are a farm and are here to sell animals and if you want breeding stock, we have it and you can buy ours and we will replace ours.  We have so many things going on, on our farm, and so many other animals to care for a few here and there don’t matter significantly on the food bowl.

We are still taking in unwanted animals with limits.  Many roosters come here from parts unknown and far away, to live the rooster dream, daily free range hen hunting with a little food hunting mixed in here and there. If you have a mean rooster we will no longer take them.  They just dont live here or we are forced to lock them up because roosters who attack humans are not allowed to be free range chickens on our farm.  Many mean roosters in the past have met mr Owl or tried to fight a fox showing off for some hens.  No matter how mean the rooster there is a meaner animal out here in the woods.
